A new Nelson fish and chip shop celebrated its first birthday by offering a good deal – and ended up selling almost 1,000 portions of fish and chips on the day!

The Market Street Chippy, which is actually on Cross Street, opened a year ago and has proved a success.

The team came up with the idea of marking the birthday by selling fish and chips to individuals for just £1 on Tuesday.

And joint owner Mr Amer Ansar said: “There were lots of people coming along. I’ve never seen so many people coming for fish and chips in my life!

“There were loads of people – we sold 954 fish and chips, just under 1,000! There was a big queue of customers going round the jewellers the corner.”

The store’s manager, Claire Mullins, added: “We were overwhelmed by the support we received from the local community. We managed to surpass all expectations by serving just under 1,000 fish and chips.

“Every so often we gave a lucky customer who wished us happy birthday a jumbo fish and chips for £1 – which usually costs £8 and feeds 2/3 people.

And trainee Alison Olcer said: “It was a great learning curve for me serving so many customers who were all so pleasant. We have the best customers who couldn’t stop complimenting how good the food and service has been throughout the year.”

And Amer then said: “ I’d like to personally thank the customers old and new for their continued support. But also my staff who were working exceptionally throughout the day. Without them this day could not have been a success.”
