August 1st is the date for the launch of an initiative by Colne Town Council when – for just £15 for a day – people can take a market stall and sell whatever they like!

The Town Council has arranged for the stalls to be pre-erected, with would-be stallholders being given a choice of locations: under the Market Canopy or in the Outdoor Market.

We wanted to give people an opportunity to dip their toes in the water

Coun. Sarah Cockburn-Price, chairman of Colne Town Council

“We wanted to give people an opportunity to dip their toes in the water,” said Coun. Sarah Cockburn-Price, chairman of Colne Town Council.

“At the same time, we hope to create new and exciting offerings for shoppers in Colne without the stallholders having to commit to take a regular slot.”

The council believes there are many people in Colne – who are perhaps hobbyists, crafters, bakers or collectors – who would like to make some money from their pastimes.

Coun. Cockburn-Price said: “Perhaps these people don’t want the hassle of setting up a business, or perhaps they usually sell via online forums, like E-bay.

“Now Colne Town Council is giving potential traders a platform in the town centre without any future commitment.”

People interested in this scheme should contact Colne’s Town Clerk, Susan Graham, to book their slot. Ring 841599 or email info@colnetowncouncil.org.uk. The £15 for the day’s use of the stall must be paid in advance.

“We are hoping to run these days on the first Saturday of the month to begin with,” explained Coun. Ash Sutcliffe, chairman of Colne Town Council’s Events Committee.

“Depending on the level of interest, we expect to provide between four and six stalls initially and we’d like to thank Liberata for supporting us in this venture.”
