REGULARS at a popular Colne watering-hole have a raised a glass to the pub’s new landlord and landlady.
Victor and Helen Monk, who previously ran corner shop Merry Monks in Skipton Road, are the new licensees at the Red Lion Hotel in Market Street.
And despite having never run a pub before, Victor said the couple were looking forward to the challenge of serving up pints of ale as opposed to pints of milk.
“We heard through the grapevine about the opening,” he said. “We thought about it for a day and then contacted the brewery, Samuel Smith’s at Tadcaster. We had an interview and then a week later got told that we had been given the position. We really didn’t expect it to be honest so it came as a bit of a shock.”
Born-and-bred in the town, the couple said they already feel at home but are under no illusion as to the task facing them.
“It’s definitely tiring, “ said Victor. “We’ve been getting up at 7 a.m. and getting to bed at 12-30 p.m., every day. We’re enjoying it though. We’re not going to be changing too much although we would like to start a pool team. The brewery has said that it will re-cloth or even replace the pool table we currently have so it would be nice to get something started.”
The Red Lion was run for the previous eight years by popular couple Tony and Joanne Parkinson.
