Call for meeting on school closure proposals

pendle Council is expected to call for a public meeting over the controversial proposals to close St Paul’s CE Primary School, Nelson, on Thursday night.

As we have previously reported, there has been much concern over Lancashire County Council’s plans to close the Hibson Road school and build a replacement one-and-a-half miles away on the site of the former Mansfield High School in Brierfield.

But parents and supporters of the school point out that not only would this be in another town, it would also not be in St Paul’s parish, but neighbouring St Luke’s.

At Thursday night’s meeting of the full Pendle Council, Coun. Eileen Ansar is due to put forward a motion calling on the council to strongly objecvt to the closure proposals and calling on County Coun. Susie Charles, Cabinet member with responsibility for schools, to meet with ward councillors as part of the ongoing public consultation process, as well as attending a public meeting for worried parents and residents.

This will be seconded by Coun. Julie Henderson.
