Councillors have called for the urgent replacement of “disintegrated” flagstones in Colne precinct.

They have called on contractors, Bridge Street Slate Supplies and Barnes and Horrocks who carried out the £150,000 work, to repair the damage.

Coun. Tony Greaves, told a meeting of Colne and District Committee: “The defective flags are rapidly turning into mushy clay during the bad weather and it is the contractors responsibility to put the situation right and cover the cost.

“It is two years since the work started and the saga needs to come to an end, our patience is exhausted.”

Coun. Greaves lay the blame on suppliers in India who had produced the faulty stones.

The committee agreed that the replacement flag stones should be taken from a quarry in Haworth, which has supplied flags for Nelson town centre.

They have given contractors a deadline of the end of April to carry out the work.
