A Colne fund-raiser and four of her pals are making a splash for charity.
Tess’ Aqua Warriors Mighty Swim Team - made up of Tess Atkinson James, Martyn Green, James Stovold, Keith Robinson and Danny Dean - will take on Swimathon 2015 at Pendle Leisure Centre on April 18th.
The group are going to great lengths to raise at least £500 for Marie Curie Cancer Care by taking on the toughest challenge of them all - the 5km distance.
Tess Atkinson James (34), whose idea it was to get involved with the national event, said: “We are swimming pretty much every day at the moment. None of us were anything like serious swimmers when we started, apart from one who has done a swimathon before.
“We have picked up the pace now, and are doing 60 to 100 lengths a session.
“We are putting our less able swimmers first and our more able swimmers last, so that they can pick up the remaining lengths.
“We are all a bit nervous as we don’t want to let anybody down. We were only going to do 1.5km to begin with, but we thought that would be too easy, so we changed the distance.”
This is not the first time Tess has gone above and beyond for cancer charities.
Among other fund-raising activities, the manager of Outcry Arts has organised a “Fight Night” at The Venue, in Colne, and last year she had the iconic Marie Curie daffodil tattooed on to her skin.
Her aim is to raise as much money as possible following the death of her Burnley grandma Audrey Platt five years ago.
Over the past 28 years more than half a million swimmers have taken part in Swimathon.
