Pendle councillor Richard Smith has stepped down from the authority for “personal reasons”.

Coun. Smith, a Labour member for Cloverhill ward in Nelson, had been a member of the council for four years and had been due to step down as a councillor at the elections in May next year, when the vacancy arising from his resignation will be filled.

The resignation means the council now comprises 19 Conservative, 17 Labour, 11 Liberal Democrat and one British National Party councillors.
