Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious road collision in the early hours of today (Saturday) left a Burnley man in a critical condition in hospital

The collision happened about 2.50am when a silver Nissan Micra, being driven North on the A56 Easterly by-pass, failed to negotiate the roundabout at Junction 8 of the M65 and collided with a tree.

The driver, a 27-year-old man from Burnley, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The road was closed for about four hours while the incident was dealt with and police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sgt. John Jennings-Wharton, of the East Road Policing Unit, said: “This collision has left a man with very serious injuries and I would appeal to anyone who saw the incident itself or the Nissan Micra in the moments before the collision to get in touch with us.”
