A WOMAN who walked out of Colne Asda with a £131 trolley load of goods, asked to be sent to prison.

Pennine magistrates heard how drug addict Samantha Nerney, who had a long record and had served time before, thought jail was the only way to stop her taking drugs and offending.

Nerney (32), of Marlin Street, Nelson, was currently subject to a community order with a drugs rehabilitation order and was on methadone.

The defendant’s solicitor, Mr Mark Williams, told the hearing: “She says she can’t stop offending and wants to go to prison. She takes the view that is the only prospect she has to stop taking illegal drugs.”

Nerney admitted theft on September 11th and got her wish. The Bench locked her up for 12 weeks, saying she was a persistent offender, ignored court orders and they had no option.
