CRIME statistics in Nelson have risen on a year-by-year comparison for the first time in many months.

Statistics presented to Pendle Council’s Nelson Committee showed that, in August, there were 176 crimes committed, five more than in August, 2010.

Insp. Phil Davies said an area of concern was the increase in vehicle crime in the Marsden, Southfield, Cloverhill and Walverden areas, which had more than doubled with sat nav systems a principal target.

He also said there had been an increasing number of thefts of scooters and small motor cycles and scrap metal. Two people had been arrested and charged in connection with the latter, he said.

Coun. Richard Smith raised concerns about the number of quad bikes being ridden by people not wearing protective headgear and weaving in and out of traffic, but Insp. Davies said they were not required to do so as the vehicles were four-wheeled.
