Police believe thieves were after car keys following a burglary at a house in Stoney Bank Road in Earby overnight.

The property was broken into between 10pm and 00-30am when the front door was forced and a packet of cigarettes were stolen.

However, police strongly suspect the thieves were looking for the owner’s vehicle keys for his high valued Audi which they failed to locate.

Sgt Kim de Curtis said: “Historically thieves have broken into addresses to steal vehicle keys as sophisticated cars are now a lot harder to steal and they need the keys.

“With this in mind, it is advised that you do not leave your car keys hanging around your front door or windows.

“Thieves are quite resourceful in obtaining car keys without even opening your door or window, especially if they are in sight.”

Anybody with any information on the above crime should call police on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
