A THIEF who racially abused a shop owner was told by Pennine magistrates his actions were unacceptable in any society.
The court was told Shaun James Wood (21) had no top on and got angry when he was refused alcohol by Abdul Ghafoor at the premises in Colne, as he did not have enough money.
Wood - said to have a drink problem - took a £1 can of Fosters, was offensive to Mr Ghafoor, pointed at him and told the victim: “You come outside of the shop and I will beat you up.”
Mr Ghafoor rang the police three times, but the defendant kept pushing the button down to stop the call. The defendant, who was caught on CCTV, was arrested, questioned ŵand made admissions.
Wood, of Cambridge Street, Colne, admitted theft from the Can and Bottle Shop and racially aggravated threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, on August 17th. He was given a community order with 12 months’ supervision and 40 hours’ unpaid work. He must pay £50 compensation.
Sue Robinson, for Wood, said he was trying to address his alcohol problem. He was on medication from his doctor to try and stop the craving.
