Vandals have caused damage to the bowling green in Marsden Park, Nelson.

Parts of the surface of the green has been burned off by someone pouring an unknown corrosive liquid on to it, meaning repairs will have to be carried out to bring it back into condition.

Bowling club chairman Eddie Wilkinson said: “It is very annoying and frustrating when this happens, particularly when the majority of our members are pensioners.

“It is not the first time it has happened and railings have been put up around the green to try to keep people out.

“We have an agreement with the council that we will lock the gate at 9pm when we have finished playing and open it in the morning for people to play.

“We used to have problems with people playing football and cricket or riding bikes on the green but that does not happen much now.

“We do not know how deep this liquid has gone down into the green.

“We will probably have to scarify it and see what needs to be done.”
