A POPULAR Pendle schoolteacher who has taught at the same school for more than 40 years has been honoured for his services to education.

Brian Coates began his teaching career at what is now Fisher-More Catholic Humanities College in January, 1971 - and this week received a Papal Blessing to mark his 40 years’ service to Catholic education.

During his career at the Gibfield Road school, Brian’s main subject has been French, but over the years he has turned his hand to other subjects including Spanish, PE, art, citizenship and geography.

Away from school, Brian has had an interest in football for years. He was connected to the YCW football team which played in local leagues and is currently press officer for Colne FC, submitting match reports to this newspaper.

“I was completely gobsmacked when I was told,” he said. “We were having a meeting in school and at the end, the head said he had a special presentation to make. I was looking round thinking it was someone’s birthday when I was asked to go forward for the blessing.”
