Staff and pupils at Whitefield Infant School in Nelson said goodbye as two members of staff set off for Russia.

Mrs Bridget Jackson and Mr Daryl Wilkinson will be spending much of the Easter holiday teaching English to children in a school in St Petersburg.

Children from the two schools have been writing to each other for some while and regularly swop art work, photographs and information about the local area.

Funding from the British Council has made it possible for the staff from Whitefield to make the journey to meet their Russian counterparts and to share ideas on teaching and learning.

School international co-ordinator Mr Wilkinson said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for both of us. The children in Mrs Jackson’s class have really enjoyed getting to know their Russian penfriends and when their teachers invited us to Russia, we were thrilled.

“We hope the Russian teachers will make a return trip to see how we deliver our curriculum and to enjoy British hospitality.”
