POLICE in Nelson have issued a warning to young smokers using sheds at a disused garden centre in the town.
Officers believe the sheds in Fry Street are made up of materials containing asbestos and are urging young people to stay away.
The Southfield and Marsden Neighbourhood Policing Team has stepped up patrols after receiving complaints from concerned residents about young people drinking and smoking in the area.
Officers are also working with Housing Pendle and Pendle Council to tackle the issues.
PCSO Mark Thornton said: “Youngsters using the sheds are not only causing problems for elderly residents, but the presence of asbestos means they are putting themselves at risk.
“We are working with the housing association and council to identify the owners of the premises and are hoping to apply anti-vandal paint to deter youngsters from using the area.”
