A HIGHLY-RESPECTED couple who were Mayor and Mayoress of Pendle almost 20 years ago will celebrate their golden wedding tomorrow.
Coun. John and Mrs Judith David met at Queen Mary College at London University in the mid-1950s and married in Nottinghamshire in 1961. Mrs David originated from there, while Coun. David was born and brought up in Brighton but was a member of a Welsh family.
Mrs David became a teacher and Coun. David worked for key companies like English Electric, then GEC. They moved round the country because of his roles.
He then had a new post with a chloride company in North Manchester before personally taking over Burnley-based East Lancashire Platers.
The Davids came to live in Pendle in 1974, and they moved into a magnificent and historic house - Hoarstones at Fence - which has connections with the Pendle Witches. They have two children - son Huw and daughter Mary.
They also keep rare livestock in the grounds of Hoarstones, including a cow, sheep and ducks.
Liberal Democrat Coun. David joined Pendle Council 25 years ago, and has had a key role for years. He and Mrs David became Mayor and Mayoress of Pendle in 1992/3.
Coun. David remains leader of the Liberal Democrat group in Pendle, and he has also had many other important posts like chairing Pendle Partnership Forum, a key Local Strategic Partnership which brings together organisations and people from the public, private, voluntary, community and faith sectors.
Coun. and Mrs David are both keen musicians. Mrs David plays with Burnley Orchestra and conducts Colne Orchestra. Coun. David plays cello with both.
Mrs David said: “We’ve had a wonderful marriage. And we had a wonderful time last weekend. On Friday, we had a party with friends and neighbours, and on Saturday with our family.” On Friday, they were joined by the current Liberal Democrat Mayor and Mayoress of Pendle, Coun. Nadeem Ahmed and his wife Rukhsana.
Visitors came from all over the country, and Mrs David’s penfriend dating back to 1953 came from Germany.
Coun. and Mrs David were a success as Mayor and Mayoress of Pendle. And tomorrow is their actual golden anniversary.
