The late Brenda Helm (S)

The late Brenda Helm (S)

The funeral takes place today of a popular Pendle darts player.

Brenda Helm (77) died at Blackpool Victoria Hospital due to a heart failure.

She was a popular Nelson darts player back in the 1980s.

She set up the first ladies’ darts team at the Lord Nelson Hotel in 1978. She became a popular barmaid, working behind the bar at both the Lord Nelson and the Clayton Arms as well as playing in both their darts teams. She also played for Nelson Gasworkers.

During the 1980s, Brenda won numerous dart trophies, both as an individual and a team member.

She teamed up with her daughter, the late Janet, to play doubles, and in the mid-80s they became a force in the darts world, winning several trophies together.

In 1987, Brenda and her partner Brian moved to Blackpool from Bishop Street, Nelson.

She continued to play darts in Blackpool, again winning numerous trophies. She also liked watching tennis as well as darts.

In 1996, Brenda suffered a heartbreak when her oldest daughter Janet died, sadly from cancer, aged just 39.

In March, 2005, Brenda suffered more heart problems when another of her daughters, Susan, died of cancer aged 44.

Brenda and Brian remained in Blackpool and continued their hobby of gardening, growing fruit and flowers.

They were frequently visited by their families, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She leaves behind her partner Brian after 40 years together, plus her children Elly, Gill and Jeff, her 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

And today her funeral is at Burnley Crematorium at 3pm.
