Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson missed his own jobs and opportunities fair in Colne today after having his appendix removed in an emergency operation last night.

Mr Stephenson was taken to hospital yesterday afternoon after seeing no improvement in his condition following medication for a diagnosis of food poisoning earlier this week.

He also missed the official opening of Burnley’s £9m. new urgent care unit on Wednesday through his illness, the irony being he was one the centre’s patients on Monday.

A stricken Mr Stephenson tweeted from his hospital bed: “Gutted to have missed my own @PendleJobsFair, but proud of my staff for managing without me. Sadly diagnosed with gangrenous appendicitis.

He added: “And as my critics say I never miss a photo opportunity here’s my #NHSselfie. Sorry for letting people down today.”

It is thought his period of rest and recuperation will be at least two weeks.
