THE cause of a house fire in Nelson earlier this week has been confirmed as arson.

Police are appealing for information following the incident in Meredith Street between 3-30 p.m. and 9-30 p.m. on Monday when a window was smashed at the empty property and the curtains set on fire in the lounge, causing extensive damage.

Detective Constable Sarah Tucker from Burnley CID said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed any suspicious activity to come forward and contact the police.

“Fortunately nobody was living in the property or the adjoining house so nobody was hurt but it could have been much worse. If anyone has any information about this incident then they must get in touch. The people responsible must be caught and brought to justice.

People with information can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or on-line at Crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
