THE youth information centre in Scotland Road, Nelson, is being considered for closure by Lancashire County Council.
Plans would be to transfer some youth services to the new Nelson youth centre - The Zone at Bradley Hub in Leeds Road. Other will go to schools.
The former furniture store next to the Nelson Leader office has been a Connexions and Infocentre providing youth information, advice and guidance for several years.
The county is considering cuts to reduce its budget, and consultation of the possible Nelson move will take place until Wednesday.
The issue was discussed at Pendle Council’s full meeting. Coun. David Whipp said: “It would be a sad loss for the centre of Nelson. It is necessary for this authority to make strong representations.”
Pendle Council leader Coun. Mike Blomeley said the county would had to consider the Connexions office as part of its budget cuts.
In a statement, County Coun. Mark Perks, the county Cabinet member for young people, said: “In common with all authorities, we are having to respond to the challenge of a tight budget settlement.”
And he added: “The changes we’re proposing will, where possible, focus on administrative and ‘back office’ costs. There will be difficult decisions to consider but, under challenging circumstances, we will do everything we can get the best outcome for young people in Lancashire.”
