Years of dedication and hard graft have put Colne pensioner Jim Smart on the shortlist for a special award.
He has been nominated as Tenant of the Year in recognition of his unwavering commitment to people in Colne through his work as the coordinator of activities at North Valley Community Centre in Birtwistle Avenue.
The regional award is given by the Tenant Participation Advisory Service.
The nomination acknowledges that Mr Smart and his wife, Brenda, have transformed the fortunes of the centre. Both in their late 60s, they are credited with turning the centre into a thriving hub of the community for all ages with its youth and over 50s clubs, and by creating a memorial garden in the grounds.
Last year the couple were presented with 2BR’s Community Champion Award, sponsored by Housing Pendle.
Mr Smart said: “I am very proud to have been nominated for this award. I truly believe that it is down to all the other volunteers at the community centre who are making me look good.”
Pendle Council’s head of housing, Janette Taylor, has known the Smarts for years. She said: “I’ve known Jim and Brenda a long time and they have worked wonders at the centre. I love going to North Valley; there’s always such a buzz at the place.
“They’re a lovely couple and they’ve put their hearts and souls into the place, so I hope they win as they would be very worthy winners.”
The awards ceremony is at The Palace Theatre, Manchester, at the end of April.
