Barrowford mountain bike and trials track opens

THE first mountain bike track and trials area in Barrowford and the Western Parishes was opened by Mayor of Pendle Coun. Shelagh Derwent.

Situated at Bull Holme playing fields, in a wooded area, it took eight weeks to transform a derelict piece of land into the track area at a cost of 40,000.

Barrowford youngsters had got together with Mr Iain Lord, parish clerk of Barrowford Parish Council and an advisor, to give ideas of the designs they would like to see.

There was a demonstration by Wheels within Wheels, a project which works with young people to develop their cycling and mechanical skills.

Guests included Barrowford parish councillors, Lancashire County Council representatives, Pendle councillors and officers.

The parish council created the new facility with help from Lancashire County Council's Environmental Projects team and Pendle's Parks Department.

Coun. Michael Simpson, chairman of Barrowford Parish Council, said: "This proves what can be achieved with co-operation from all three tiers of local government and small, but crucial, grants from a variety of sources."

Coun. Ann Kerrigan, Pendle's representatives for parks and leisure, said: "This is a fantastic and much-needed facility for the area's teenagers and it is great they had their say in its design.

"I am sure it will be enjoyed and appreciated by everyone who uses it and I would personally like to acknowledge Iain Lord's hard work in making this happen."

County Coun. Janice Hanson added: "We are pleased to be associated with this fantastic project, which showcases how successful communities can be in developing projects given the right support."
