Birth rate may lead to expansion of Walverden Primary School, Nelson

EDUCATION bosses are keeping a "watching brief" on the position at a Nelson primary school to see if expanded facilities are needed.

The meeting of Lancashire Local (Pendle) heard from Jim Blackburn, Lancashire County Council's schools buildings officer for Pendle, that if the birth rate in the area near Walverden Primary School continued to rise, plans for an expansion at the Bracewell Street school or a move to a new site could be drawn up.

"We are keeping a watching brief on the position at the school.

"We have been in discussion over potential new sites and if one becomes available, we would take the opportunity to purchase it."

Coun. Eileen Ansar warned against delaying any land purchase.

"The area around the school itself is not big enough to accommodate a new school.

"All the prime building land has got people interested and we need to take action now," she said.
