Civic reception for Colne's Olympic hero

A WELL deserved homecoming for Pendle's Olympic hero Steven Burke is all ready to take place on Bank Holiday Monday.

Pendle Council is planning to greet the Colne cyclist with a full civic ceremony in celebration of his bronze medal success.

Well-wishers will have the chance to congratulate 20-year-old Steven as he arrives at Colne Railway Station at 2-40 p.m. and is welcomed by Pendle Council's cycling officer, Patricia Wilson.

By 3 p.m., Steven is expected to undertake a lap of honour around the town in an open-top car followed by a fleet of cyclists from Pendle clubs.

Steven and his family are then expected to be greeted at Colne Town Hall by Mayor of Pendle Coun. Shelagh Derwent, leader of Pendle Council Coun. John David, chairman of Colne and District Committee Coun. Sharon Davies and chairman of Colne Town Council Coun. Dorothy Lord. Here, he will be presented with a bouquet, watched by his parents, Alvin and Sharon Burke, brother and sister Nathan (17) and Zoe (14), and grandads Brian Wesson and Vinnie Burke.

Coun. Ann Kerrigan said: "We really want to present Steven with some sort of memento because we are just so proud of him. At the moment we're thinking of some kind of engraved picture, but nothing has been decided on.

"Obviously, with Steven being in Beijing and his parents in Bulgaria, we've tried to organise this event as best we can and are hoping everything takes off. Everyone in Pendle is just so proud of having an Olympic medallist from the area and I'm sure people can't wait to congratulate him."

The celebrations are expected to continue with a private party at Colne's Royal British Legion Club.
