Civil War battle at Barnoldswick Gala

MORE than 100 Roundheads and Cavaliers will descend on Victory Park today for Barnoldswick's Gala weekend.

The soldiers, from the Sealed Knot re-enactment group will fight it out English Civil War style with swords, pikes, cannons and muskets.

Organiser Coun. David Whipp said: "Overall it's shaping up to be fantastic, the gala appeals to an audience of all ages and everyone is really excited."

A 2m. revamp of the park is almost complete, funded by Pendle Council Capital Programme.

On Saturday and Sunday the park will be transformed into an authentic 17th century soldier's encampment, complete with cooking pots, armourers and gunpowder makers.

Visitors will be treated to a slice of ordinary life during the civil war.

After a series of displays involving cannons, muskets, swords and pikes the rival armies will parade through the park before engaging in two 90-minute battles, on Saturday from 2-30 p.m. and 12-30 p.m. on Sunday.

Over on the music stage, seven-piece act "Big J and the Piccolo Chickens" will be the headline act on Saturday, with the party beginning at 7 p.m.

Award-winning songwriter, violinist and pianist Joni Fuller will then take to the stage with her trade-mark performance style.

Cannon fire from the Cavalier artillery and a mass sky lantern launch will light up the night sky, with a furious firework finale to round off the evening.

On Sunday, the music kicks off again at 2 p.m. with acts including Sam Hird and Hannah Nicholson, Teaspoon, The Mockingbirds and Beggar Joe performing.

Other activities throughout the weekend include hands-on workshops, charity stalls and a funfair.

The park is free to enter during the event, with donations invited towards the cost of staging the weekend. It is 2 to enter the marquee for the music stage on Saturday and Sunday, or 5 for a family ticket.
