Colne man 'strangled' partner as she held child

A MAN who attacked his partner as she held a child in her arms subjected her to a "degree of strangulation" a court heard.

Michael Singleton carried out a prolonged attack, could have stopped, but persisted. Pennine magistrates told him a custodial sentence was warranted.

The defendant (24), of Glenroy Avenue, Colne, admitted allegations of assault by beating. He was given six weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months, with 50 hours' unpaid work and 12 months' supervision.

Mr Mark Irlam (defending) said Singleton was petrified of the prospect of going to prison. He had not realised the full seriousness of his actions on the night.
