Demolition of Palace Theatre, Nelson, to go-ahead

THE Government has given the go-ahead for the demolition of the former Palace bingo hall in Holme Street, Nelson.

Pendle Council had originally planned to knock the old theatre down last year, but delays were caused after theatre heritage groups and the Historical Theatres Trust opposed the move.

But on Monday, the Secretary of State announced the demolition could proceed – news which was welcomed by Coun. Allan Buck, executive member for town centres.

He said: "I am delighted common sense has now prevailed. I agree it is sad to see a historic theatre go, but it had long since lost any use as a theatre.

"It had become a huge empty barn of a building, in poor condition, and there was absolutely no prospect of it having any useful purpose in future.

"In addition, the building had become the biggest eyesore in the middle of Nelson. It lost its front some 25 years ago when Leeds Road was widened and the blank and ugly red brick walls could contribute nothing to the future of Nelson.

"Just knocking it down will improve that part of Nelson.

"In the short term the site will probably be used for much needed long-term car parking, but in the longer run we expect this site will contribute to an important regeneration of that part of the town centre.

"It's all part of the long-term Liberal Democrat determination to make a success of the centre of Nelson."
