Environmentalist Adds Her Concern Over Dog Waste Bins
A KELBROOK environmentalist has flagged up concerns over dog excrement being placed in bins just feet away from a picnic area.
Mrs Pat Dickins, of Vicarage Road, was out walking with her own dog when she spotted people putting filled bags in the bins bordering the seating area by the beck bridge on Church Lane.
"It is good that people are using the bins, but from a health point of view, I think it is awful that we have such waste just feet away from seats," she said.
"People often sit on those benches to eat their fish and chips and we have children playing close by in the beck.
"Surely we should have a proper dog bin, with a closed lid?"
Pendle cleansing chief Bryan Thompson said that dog waste was classed as litter, and as such it could be placed in litter bins.
"It is not against the law to use an ordinary bin. We do not encourage it, but it is better than people leaving the mess on the floor," he said.
Mr Thompson said one of the reasons that designated dog waste bins were introduced was because of the unpleasantness that could arise for other litter bin users if someone did not secure their package of dog waste securely.
He felt the depth and design of the bins at Kelbrook would prevent any problems arising there.
