Free attractions in Pendle over Heritage Open Days

VISITORS to Pendle will get the chance to see the cells at Nelson Town Hall this weekend - which once included a police station and court.

They can also walk in the footsteps of the Pendle Witches and learn about lead mining in Earby. But there is also so much more - and it's all free!

Pendle is taking part in the national Heritage Open Days. Organised by English Heritage, this is the biggest free celebration of England's architecture, history and culture.

Coun. Jonathan Eyre, who represents tourism in Pendle, said: "Pendle is a great place to come for visitors who love heritage - we have so much here!

"Heritage Open Days are a great way in which Pendle can showcase lots of different aspects of that marvellous heritage, including one of the country's most unique mining museums, the great steaming day at Bancroft Mill, Barnoldswick.

"And, of course, no trip to Pendle would be complete without a tour of the sites associated with Britain's most famous witches on the Pendle Witches Trail."

Mr Mike Williams, tourism officer for Pendle, said: "It's great that Pendle is again celebrating its fantastic heritage at this national event. Working with neighbouring Burnley, it allows us to show off a great deal more and to increase the size and impact of the event.

"Both Pendle and Burnley have so much to excite visitors looking for the best heritage experience.

"We are also part of the much wider 'Heritage Revealed' regional campaign run by Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board, so the spotlight will truly be on this part of the country's heritage."

Events in Pendle also include:

• Learn about the fascinating stories of the Ghosts, Heroes and Villains of Colne on a short guided walk on Saturday.

• Be inspired by following the Moo Trail on Saturday from Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford.

• Get all steamed up at Bancroft Mill's special free Steaming Day on Sunday.

• And just around the corner from the mill, get a great sense of the life and times of one of the UK's most famous women Socialists at the former Glen Cottage in Earby, also on Sunday.
