Major Nelson road to close from Monday

SEWER work which will mean Scotland Road, Nelson, closes for weeks gets under way on Monday.

The crucial £350,000 scheme aims to tackle flooding in Nelson.

Homes in Scotland Road can suffer floods because the local sewer system is too small to cope. During heavy storms, excess rainwater can spill from the sewers on to the highway, into gardens and, in extreme circumstances, into properties.

The new scheme will see United Utilities create a new, larger sewer beneath Scotland Road, running between Fountain Street and Clayton Street.

Work starts on Monday and will last until the end of April. During the work, Scotland Road will be closed to traffic between Fountain Street and Clayton Street, with traffic diverted via Leeds Road and Reedyford Road. Clayton Street will remain open throughout the work, allowing shoppers to drive to Morrisons as usual.

United Utilities says local homes which are vulnerable to internal flooding will be better protected as a result of the scheme, while other households will also benefit from a reduced risk of sewers spilling on to local highways and pavements.

United Utilities’ project co-ordinator John Byron said: “Sewer flooding is one of those domestic nightmares you are never likely to forget. Thankfully, this scheme will make it far less likely to happen - giving residents peace of mind.

“As the population has grown in Nelson and climate change has led to longer, heavier periods of rain, the local sewers have struggled to cope.

“By increasing the size of the sewer pipes we can make sure the network can hold more wastewater, helping to reduce the risk of flooding during rainstorms.

“We will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during this important engineering scheme.”
