Man in hospital after Nelson house fire - arson probe
A MAN had to be taken to hospital after a suspected arson attack on a home in Nelson.
The fire started in rubbish in the yard of the house in Charles Street about 4 p.m. on Wednesday, and spread to the house itself.
Crews from nearby Nelson Fire Station had already been called out on a rescue at Widdop Reservoir, so fire engines from Colne, Accrington, Earby and Preston were called in. The house was badly ablaze and they were at the scene for two hours.
The kitchen was worst hit, with further fire damage to the dining room and lounge and extensive smoke damage to the rest of the property.
Smoke also went into a neighbouring house and an occupant had to be taken to hospital after inhaling smoke.
There was no one in the house initially hit at the time.
DC Kaz Garda, of Nelson CID, said the house was owned by someone living in Ireland but is understood to be rented out. He added: "The fire started in the backyard and spread to the dwelling."
He added there was extensive damage on both floors and the neighbour was taken to hospital but later released.
Call DC Garda on 472644, or call Crimestoppers, free and in confidence, on 0800 555111 with any information.
