Nelson & Colne College catering and hospitality students honoured

Nelson and Colne College is celebrating the success of its professional cookery and hospitality students this year.

The college earned a number of prestigious accolades, awarded to its talented young chefs.

The catering and hospitality department at the college is renowned locally and nationally as a centre of excellence in culinary education and training.

Each year, a large number of young people progress into the industry, working under some of the top chefs in the country, such as Raymond Blanc.

In the past academic year, students from the department entered a number of prestigious competitions including one at El Bulli - acknowledged as the world's best restaurant - and the "Gluten-free Chef of the Year" competition with the National Coeliac Society.

The talented students triumphed in a number of culinary competitions this year, including Angus McMillan, who was awarded the Best Young Chef award at the Tempest Arms Annual Chutney Festival, and Amanda Marsh, Tatiana Vorontsova and Stacy Ashcroft, who were awarded third place despite tough opposition in the regional heats of the Brake Brothers Student Team Chef Competition.

First year student Alana Butterworth was thrilled to win fourth place at the Skills Olympics – a catering competition organised by the University of Derby, where not only was she the only first year student taking part, but also the youngest!

Last but not least, students Simon Sharples and Simon Wood won fourth place in UK Seafood Championships.

The college is dedicated to providing students with a range of experiences, from industry visits to services led by visiting chefs like Michelin-starred Northcote chef Nigel Howarth, plus a range of competitions against other colleges from across the country.

The college houses a stylish and modern restaurant and bistro called Farringtons. It can seat up to 55 customers, and the bistro can seat 32. It can offer exceptional cuisine and outstanding service to diners. To make a reservation, ring 440334 during term time.
