Nelson women's charity trek to ancient Inca sites in Peru

TWO friends from Nelson will tackle altitude sickness in the name of charity when they trek 4,200m above sea level to the ruins of Machu Picchu, Peru.

Anne Connor and Debbie Denney will trek around the ancient Inca site in September to raise money for the Motor Neurone Association, a cause close to their hearts.

Anne said: "My uncle died from the degenerative disease and Debbie works at Pendleside Hospice and comes into contact with many sufferers. It is really important to both of us to raise money for the association which helps sufferers live better lives."

The pair have started training and fund-raising ready for their trip. Anne said: "We are climbing Pendle Hill and going to aerobics classes to help us get fit."

She added: "The one thing we can't really prepare for is the extreme weather conditions, where temperatures will vary from -15 degrees to 20 degrees."

Anne and Debbie have already raised 1,000 for the Motor Neurone Association through fund-raising raffles but have plenty of events planned with the aim of raising another 4,000.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, August 14th, Anne will hold a speed dating night at the Crown Hotel, Colne, costing 10 per person. There will also be a raffle, where prizes including a Mediterranean cruise can be won. Tickets cost 1 and can be ordered by calling 01604 611699.
