£1m. canal-side marina plans unveiled

EXCITING plans for a £1m. canal-side marina have been unlocked after councillors granted permission to press ahead.

Work starts soon on the ambitious 102-berth marina at Reedley Hallows on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal after Burnley Council and Pendle Borough Council passed plans.

Barden Mill owner Mr Jason Fildes, who made the application, said he was delighted and if all went to plan there would be boats in the marina by August.

He added that Reedley Marina, as it will be known, will provide narrowboat owners with a safe and secure environment to moor their boats. The plans include a marina office, a members' room, washrooms and laundry.

He said: "The nearest marinas are in Skipton and Chorley, so this facility will be an excellent gateway to the region. It will be Pennine Lancashire's leading marina and provide canal-users with a much-needed facility. It's a long cruise between Chorley and Skipton on a narrowboat.

"But the real beauty of this location is its stunning scenery – the marina has uninterrupted views across the valley up to Pendle Hill. We have already had some interest in the marina from boat owners and over the coming months will be working hard marketing the marina so people know what is on offer."

It is hoped the marina will provide a boost to tourism in the region. Plans had to go before Pendle Council and Burnley Council, as the site borders both authorities, while the project has also been assessed by British Waterways.

Mr Fildes added: "Last year at Barden Mill we had 150 coach visits from people combining shopping visits with cruises up the canal and when the marina is built that will only increase. I have no doubts it will provide a boost for tourism in the area.

"In the future we plan to include trips to other local attractions like Gawthorpe Hall and Towneley, as well as canal cruises."
