Barrowford actor Jody Latham to appear in ‘Eastenders’

EastEnders will be getting a touch of gritty northern talent when famed Pendle actor Jody Latham appears in Walford, cast in its latest controversial storyline.

The Barrowford actor (29) is to play the grim role of a pimp in the BBC1 hit show, and is set to cause uproar when he sets foot in the East End square and befriends a vulnerable girl.

The plot sees Bianca’s step-daugter, Whitney Dean, fall for the charms of an unscrupulous Latham, who leads her astray, going on to sexually exploit her for financial gain when Bianca leaves.

No stranger to hard-hitting roles, The Fixer star, who is formerly of Barnoldswick, is also widely known for his role as Philip “Lip” Gallagher in Shameless.

He was cast by EastEnders screen writers to take on the role, and filming of the dark and dangerous world of prostitution has just got underway.

EastEnders bosses have already defended their decision to shoot the story saying that it is exploring a growing problem that many young women in the UK face. Always one for tackling serious social issues, EastEnders was criticised in recent weeks for their cot death and baby swop story.

Since last year, writers have been working closely with Comic Relief to devise a storyline aimed at raising the awareness of the issue.

Gilly Green, head of UK Grants at Comic Relief, said: “It is vital that we continue to alert young people to the dangers and the opportunity to work with EastEnders will make a huge audience aware of this issue.”

Jody is expected to appear on our screens in March and a special ten-minute episode is being featured as part of Comic Relief’s Night of TV on Friday, March 18th.
