Brierfield’s £500,000 library makeover sees visitor numbers double

BRIERFIELD Library has seen a doubling of visitor numbers following a makeover worth more than half a million pounds.
And to celebrate this achievement, county councillors joined staff, managers, library users and children from the Reedley Primary School choir at the official reopening of the newly-refurbished building on Colne Road.
County Coun. Mike Calvert, cabinet member for adult and community services, said: “As this superb refurbishment shows, here in Lancashire, we believe that libraries are a valuable resource for the entire community and we are continuing to invest in the service wherever we can.
“The results speak for themselves. When the library reopened to the public in May, there was an initial monthly increase in membership of more than 100% and figures for June showed the number of visitors had nearly doubled.
“Staff have welcomed many new faces to the library over the past couple of months, and I’m very pleased to hear this includes more families, who are all keen to make the most of the excellent new facilities here.”
The improvements include a new roof, a refurbished meeting room with kitchen facilities, a vending machine, a TV screen and a public toilet with baby changing facilities.
There is also movable shelving to help create a flexible space for community events, and the building now has Wi-Fi, together with the option of self-service facilities for people borrowing or returning loan items.
The celebrations included special awards for Reedley pupils Anisah and Adibah Iqbal, who had successfully completed the ‘Relay Readers’ challenge.
Julie Bell, Lancashire County Council’s libraries manager, presented the sisters with trophies for their ‘Marathon’ read of 76 books each.
Julie said: “I’d like to congratulate Anisah and Adibah on their fantastic achievement. They’re part of a new generation of enthusiastic young readers, and it’s great to present them with their trophies here in Brierfield’s newly-modernised library.”
