A FORMER Mayor’s attendant from Colne has died peacefully, aged 90.

Clem Tansey, a true Colner, will be remembered by all who knew him for his extensive local knowledge and wicked sense of humour.

As well as being known for his role as Colne’s 43rd Mayor’s attendant, the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary School pupil, who enjoyed walking and DIY, was also respected for his roles as caretaker at Colne’s Municipal Hall, where he worked for over 20 years, and superintendent of Pendle’s Civic Halls.

He lived at various streets over the years, including Beech Street, Derby Street, and Queen Street, where he stayed for about 65 years, and also had a huge impact on the local church. The “family man” and “true gentleman” was even awarded the highly prestigious Bene Merenti medal for 65 years of exceptional service to Sacred Heart Church.

Clem, who leaves behind two daughters, one son, two sisters, one brother, three step-daughters, one step-son, and many grandchildren, died at The Grange Care Home, after suffering with a short illness. He was surrounded by his immediate family.

Daughter Joanne Henderson said: “We were all with him at the end — it was very peaceful.

“His time at The Grange was a short, but happy, stay.

“Dad was one of the last Colne characters. He was a Colne man through and through.

“He had so many tales to tell us. We have laughed.”

And daughter Margaret said: “Dad was a proud Colner.

“He was helpful to everybody.

“We also want to say how marvellous they were at The Grange. They were exceptional.

“He made friends with the district nurses and the physiotherapists. He just loved company.”

Clem’s funeral will take place at Sacred Heart Church at 10am on Monday. Anybody is welcome to attend. No dress code has been set.
