A PENDLE councillor has called for a review of procedure into the checking of taxis on local roads and streets.

Coun. Tommy Cooney said there had been an increasing number of taxis failing spot checks with a recent exercise in Nelson finding faults on 65% of vehicles.

His brother, council leader Coun. Joe Cooney, said the situation needed to be improved. “There have been some serious concerns raised such as loose wheels and damaged springs.

“It is a very small number of operators who are at fault and I would certainly welcome more checks.”

Coun. Linda Crossley called for the names of operators whose vehicles failed checks to be released to the public.
