Couple get engaged at top of Mount Kilimanjaro
HE had just scaled Africa's highest mountain, but Gavin Roper still had enough breath left to propose to his girlfriend.
Mr Roper (31), of Wheatley Lane, Fence, had just conquered Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with his girlfriend of 13 years, Miss Kelly Love (28), when he got down on one knee.
The couple had just climbed 19,340ft in five days to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Mr Roper, who works for communications company C2, said: "At the top I must have got really bad altitude sickness because I popped the question to Kelly!
"Having raised more than 2,000 for another charity from a sportsman's dinner we held at Burnley Football Club last year, we decided we enjoyed it that much we wanted to carry on so this time we picked Macmillan.
"The trek to the summit was done overnight to the crater rim on the steep slopes of the east-south-east facing Mweka route. It winds through some beautiful scenery, which changes quite dramatically every day.
"The route was very physically challenging with the overnight trek to the summit requiring mental and physical toughness, due to the high altitude and short amount of time to rest before the overnight summit attempt."
