EDUCATION: Salterforth Primary’s OFSTED joy

Staff and pupils at Salterforth Primary School are celebrating after receiving a good Ofsted report.
Ofsted inspectors visited the school on September 20th and 21st and all aspects were rated as good, up from satisfactory at the previous inspection in June 2010.
Achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management were all given the status of “good” in the report.
The report states that children have “positive educational experiences” and are well prepared for their next stage in education, adding that achievement is good and “pupils make good progress through the school”.
The report goes on to say that “teaching is consistently good” with well-managed classrooms, “pupils behave well and have positive attitudes to learning” and “the astute leadership of the headteacher has been central to the school’s good improvement since the previous inspection”.
However, for the school to become outstanding, the report suggests that teachers need to provide more opportunities for pupils to be actively and independently involved in learning and that staff lack expertise in asking incisive questions to extend the thinking skills of groups.
It adds that not enough emphasis is placed on guiding pupils to make decisions for themselves about how to improve and that pupils are not proficient in using their mathematical calculation skills to solve problems in real-life situations.
Headteacher Helena Dunsdon said: “We are a small school with big ambitions for our children.
“We give them a wide variety of experiences that enriches their academic achievement and wider development. The whole school are proud to have this acknowledged by Ofsted and we all look forward to building on this success.
“The report particularly noted that all pupils, irrespective of their individual needs, make good progress and commended the school on its effective use of the pupil premium especially given the current concerns raised nationally of it being used appropriately.”
