Fatal road accident in Nelson: witness appeal
AN appeal has been made for witnesses to come forward following the fatal accident in which a Pendle family doctor died.
Pedestrian Dr Mohammed Ikram Malik MBE was involved in a collision with a car in Nelson on Friday, September 7th. It was initially thought to be not too serious an accident, but he suffered a brain injury, needed two operations and died in Royal Preston Hospital the following Wednesday.
The police and Dr Malik’s family have requested anyone who witnessed the accident ,and has not been interviewed yet, to come forward.
The accident happened shortly before 2pm. Dr Malik (75) was going from his surgery at Yarnspinners Health Centre to the Ghausia Mosque for prayers. He was crossing Pendle Street near Morrisons when the accident happened.
He did get up, but was taken to hospital by ambulance. The driver of the car involved stopped at the scene.
The police have confirmed that the cause of the accident is still under investigation. There has not been an arrest. A spokesman said: “If you have seen it happen, we would like to speak to you.
“We would like to remind the public who witnessed the accident to come forward, which would be a help to the family who have had a tragic connection. If anyone was a witness, they can contact us by calling 101.”
As a result of the tragedy, Dr Malik’s wife, Dr Raisa Malik, said: “Me and my family would like people who witnessed the accident to come forward and speak to the police and give a statement.”
Highly-respected Dr Malik had been a GP in Nelson for more than 30 years. He hwas chairman of Building Bridges Pendle and People’s Enterprise and Empowerment Forum, and had been chairman of Pendle Community Safety Partnership and Lancashire Association of Racial Equality Councils.
He had also been a member of Pendle Partnership, Pendle Primary Care Trust and others. He carried out significant work in bringing the community in Pendle together.
On his death, there was shock for the community and many people paid tribute to what he had done. Almost 4,000 people attended his funeral at Ghausia Mosque.
