Man (27) seriously hurt in explosion at Nelson house

A 27-year-old man suffered serious injuries in what is thought to have been an explosion at a house in Princess Street, Nelson, on Friday evening.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 7-38pm and the man was taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering arm, chest and face burns. He is still in a serious condition in hospital.

Both police and fire officers are investigating the cause of the incident but police have said that, at this stage, they are not looking for anyone else connected with it.

There was severe fire damage to the outhouse of the building and a fire service spokesman said: “There was another explosion when we got there but it could have been an aerosol canister in a bin.”

It is thought it could have been a gas explosion which caused the incident.
