MP calls for action on canal litter

FOLLOWING ongoing complaints that the stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal through Pendle remains a dumping ground for litter, Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson has called on the Canal and River Trust to take action.

Complaints from residents who have contacted the MP centre on problems with litter and fly tipping along the stretch between Brierfield and Nelson.

The canal is overseen by the newly formed trust, which has a team which patrols the canal from a base at Gannow Top in Burnley through to Greenberfield Locks and the borough boundary in Barnoldswick.

Mr Stephenson said: “The canal is used by many residents and tourists and recent additions like the Reedley Marina have been a great boost to our area.

“However, the amount of litter along some sections have led to residents saying some parts are now an ugly eyesore rather than a tourist attraction.

“Sadly despite Pendle Council pushing for progress, nothing has happened to date.

“That’s why I am calling on the trust to take action and offered my services to help get started on the work to clean up the canal. The ball is in their court.”
