A FRAUDSTER got £3,500 benefits she wasn’t entitled to by not letting on her partner was working, a court heard.

Pennine magistrates were told how Serena Carr carried out the intentional employment support allowance scam over one year and four months. One claim was fraudulent from the start.

The hearing was told Conrad Andrews, her partner, was employed as a casual security officer with G4S and she failed to tell the Department for Work and Pensions.

The defendant admitted failing to notify a change of circumstances to the DWP between May 8th, 2010, and September 24th, 2010, at Nelson, and falsely making a statement to obtain benefit on February 3rd, 2011.

Carr (29), of Brentwood Road, Nelson, was fined £70, with a £15 victim surcharge and £85 costs. The defendant is still on state handouts and the penalty and overpaid money will be taken from her benefits.

Miss Parveen Akhtar, prosecuting for the DWP, said the total overpayment was £3,598.25. Carr had no previous convictions.

Miss Krystal Savoy (defending) said Carr wrongly believed the only thing that affected the claim was details about herself.

She accepted she had not read documents that had come through the post from the DWP, it was her duty to declare the fact her partner was working and she failed to do so.

The defendant continued to claim benefits. At present, she claimed employment support allowance, as she was no longer fit to work. Carr suffered from depression, anxiety and sciatica.

Miss Savoy added the overpaid money was being paid back already.
