PHOTOS: Football tournament is a charity winner

A CHARITY football tournament put on a winning display after raising nearly £1,000 for two very worthy causes.

Held at Colne Leisure Centre, some 15 teams from across Burnley and Pendle entered the six-a-side competition.

The winner team was All Stars, from Burnley, who triumphed over Daneshouse in the final. The real winners though were Pendleside Hospice and Ghausia Girls’ High School, Nelson, who received £800 and £170 respectively.

University students Jamshed Zakir and Rafaad Ali, both from Nelson, organised the event and Jamshed said the day could not have gone any better.

“We spent two months planning the tournament right up until the day before so we’re glad that it all went well. We weren’t sure how much money we were going to raise so we didn’t know how many different charities we would give money to. We were always gong to give something to the high school but when we realised we had raised nearly £1,000 we decided to give some to Pendleside Hospice as well. They do a lot of good work in the community and it is important that they are well supported.”

Trophies were presented on the day by Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson and Jamshed said he hoped the tournament would now help inspire others.

“I’m not sure if we’re going to be running another one next year but hopefully some of the youngsters who came along will think about doing something like this again. There were around 200 people there on the day so it was very well supported. We would just like to say thank you to Mansha Sweet Centre, Santa’s Takeaway, Sweet Dreams and 3B Systems who sponsored the event.”
