FIRE SCENE: Firefighters battle the blaze at the coffin factory with their aerial ladder platform.

A COFFIN factory which was destroyed by fire in March has suffered another big blaze.

Six fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms were called to the scene off Leeds Road in Nelson on Sunday night and the main road was closed to traffic.

Back in March, Walter Lambert and Sons’ plant in Colbran Street was highly damaged and part of it has now been demolished. The rest has not been in use because of the destruction.

But on Sunday, the fire service was again called to the factory at 8-20pm, and the flames had gone through the roof. Crews from Nelson, Colne and Burnley attended and were joined by the large aerial machines so they could jet water in from above.

Once the fire was under control, Leeds Road was again opened to traffic but crews were there for hours. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
