THE Nelson and district branch of the Royal British Legion launched the 2012 Poppy Appeal at the ACE Centre, Nelson, on Saturday.

Air cadets and Legion officials were on hand during the day, and in the evening the annual Splash of Red dance was held.

The event was sponsored by Asda Colne and more than 100 people were entertained by the Swing City Big Band.

The fund raising part of the evening was launched by Mrs Audrey Westwell, chairman of the Brierfield Action in the Community Group, who presented Mrs Christine Sutcliff, the Poppy Appeal organiser and Mrs Janice Taylor the branch treasurer with a cheque for £583 which was raised at a concert in July.
