Smoke-control warning for Pendle residents
Pendle Council’s environmental health team is reminding people who live in smoke control areas to check they’re using the correct fuel on their open fire or solid fuel appliance.
Coun. John David, portfolio holder for environmental health in Pendle, explained: “Over the last few years, we have noticed a significant increase in inquiries about using solid fuel.
“This is down to the increases in gas prices and possibly because people are more conscious of climate change.
“If you live in a built up area, it is probably a smoke control area.
”And if you live in one, you must follow certain rules to ensure your chimney isn’t giving off smoke.
“For example, if you have an open fire, you must only burn authorised smokeless fuels.
“Or if you have a solid fuel appliance, you should make sure it is allowed to be used in a smoke control area – this is known as an ‘exempt appliance’.
“Likewise – you must use only the fuel for which the appliance is designed and operate it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
“If your chimney is found to be emitting smoke in a smoke control area, you risk a fine of up to £1,000 under the Clean Air Act 1993.
“No one wants to be hit with such a hefty fine, so please take the time to check you’re not breaking any rules.”
