Status quo for parliamentary boundary

vote

THE planned shake-up of the Pendle Parliamentary constituency is unlikely to go ahead for the next five years after legislation bringing about major changes was blocked in the House of Lords.

Last year, the Boundary Commission for England proposed adding Briercliffe, Cliviger and Worsthorne to the current constituency as part of a redrawing of boundaries across the country as part of a plan to reduce the number of MPs from 650 to 600.

But an amendment by a Labour peer aiming to postpone the boundary review until 2018 won cross-party support in the Lords and although the Government is expected to try to overturn the amendment when the legislation returns to the Commons later in the year, it is thought unlikely that the bill will become law.
